Controversial Value Proposition Insights

Discover the surprising secrets to crafting compelling value propositions that go beyond just being better than your competitors.

Old architecture and new architecture divided diagonally by a line.

A few controversial things I believe about value propositions:

💣 1) Just being better than your competitor won't make the difference.

I'm not saying you don't have to build a great product that outperforms your competitors.

I'm just saying that having a different and surprising approach to solving your customers' problems will make a difference for the success of your innovation.

💥 2) A value proposition without a risk reversal is like an office without an emergency exit.

A risk reversal will get your customers to sign because they always have an exit if they don't like what they get.

😲 3) Make sure you deliver on what you promise in your value proposition.
Otherwise, everyone will use their risk reversal, and you still have nothing.

Once customers commit to your value proposition, do everything in your power to ensure you deliver on your promise.

⁉️ 4) Underpromise, overdeliver.

Promise enough to make your prospects and leads convert into customers, but never, ever overpromise and underdeliver.

👎 5) Don't go for mass markets.

Try to create your own categories.
Focus on a niche, nail your value proposition, and work into adjacent niches.

➕ 6) Your value proposition is not just your product explained in benefits.

You should include:

- Your target group
- How you will change the lives of your target group
- The product that will change their lives
- Your business model (there is more than subscription models in this world!)
- Your risk reversal.
